According to this Gartner article, sales of Google's Chromebooks have really taken off, with an estimated 5.2 million units shipping this year (2014). With four of the big hardware players having good success with these small, dedicated-purpose cloud computing laptops... I think we have to concede that two big changes are happening. First and most significantly, end-user expectations of what their desktop and/or laptop can and can't do are beginning to evolve. In my experience, this is where technological change, or rather its adoption, takes the most time and effort. Secondly, the push for cloud computing is really gaining traction. For SMB environments, especially, this can result in a measurable impact on the bottom line. Capital expenditures and operational costs once associated with building and maintaining complex infrastructure can now be redirected to inexpensive, commoditized, cloud-based computing solutions.

Is this impacting your organization's technology plans?

Does this paradigm shift affect your personal computing choices, too?
